Bah, bad at explaining things, but it's as if that's what they're thinking, not some impersonal narrator with "he said, she said"s tucked in everywhere. So it works, as a personal narrative, but if you're not quite happy with that you could try adding in some descriptive stuff? You have some mention of setting/scenery in sentences like "Sitting up I looked out into the ocean and groaned, who knew that saying was so true. Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink" but that's still written as if the whole thing were a personal account and some subvocalisation. *shrugs* ...I don't know! ;)

For me, I find I'm able to most short pieces better if I'm right inside the character's head, but for the longer ones I can't sustain it, so I write in third person (usually without thinking about it).

2006-09-04 [Kaimee]: Good reason to always look at the word count neh? It hurts when something like that happens... You could try to write a short story with the same theme/plot, taking the essence of your story and paring it down to fit, and have it as a separate piece. A lot of writers do that actually, wrote a short story version before they go on to finish the real version, or the novel. It's a great way to try and summarise for yourself, as well as an opportunity to explore different ideas than you're going for in the 'real' version... :P
